April 21, 2009 - Every 20 seconds, someone breaks a bone due to osteoporosis Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease in humans. It is currently estimated that 10 million people in the United States carry the diagnosis of osteoporosis with another 34 million people either undiagnosed or with low bone mass. Statistics show 1 out of every 2 women in the US will develop osteoporosis in her lifetime and 1 out of every 5 men will go on to develop the disease. These numbers are expected to rise as the baby boomer population ages. By next year, it is estimated almost 52 million people will be affected by osteoporosis or low bone mass. Because of these staggering numbers and the anticipated cost on our healthcare system, the National Osteoporosis Foundation has collaborated with a council of medical specialists in the field of bone health to develop an updated guide for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. This guide brings a renewed awareness to screening, prevention, and treatment of this silent bone disease known as osteoporosis. New Hampshire Neurospine Institute (NHNSI) is a proud member of the NOF and has made a commitment to our patients to diagnose and treat bone and joint disorders as well as educate our patients on bone related diseases. One of the most prevalent of these diseases is Osteoporosis. At NHNSI, a thorough history and exam combined with the FRAX Assessment Tool is utilized to provide important information regarding increased fracture risk due to osteoporosis. This assessment is based on individual patient risk factors thus allowing for a more personalized approach to prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. To promote patient education, NHNSI hosts an Osteoporosis Support Group (OPSG). The OPSG offers educational information, peer support, and resources to those suffering from or interested in obtaining more information about osteoporosis. The group meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6pm. Lecture topics and presenters vary monthly. (Click here for OPSG schedule). To further show our commitment to bone health, NHNSI will be hosting an Osteoporosis Health Fair on October 20th, 2009 -- World Osteoporosis Awareness Day. There will be screening, informational booths, refreshments, and a mini-lecture series given by local bone health specialists covering topics related to osteoporosis. Further information and schedule will be available in the upcoming months. At New Hampshire Neurospine Institute, we are committed to providing each patient with an individualized healthcare approach utilizing the professional expertise of orthopedic spine surgeons, neurosurgeons, orthopedic physicians, physical medicine specialists, and physical rehabilitation. We are also committed to providing patients with the knowledge necessary to promote good bone health now and throughout a lifetime.
