Patient Case Study: A Firefighter's Road to Recovery
At NHNSI, we believe that Physical Therapy is about returning you to the highest level of function achievable, so you can get back to your life. Clearly, it takes a certain kind of individual to push through the hard work that it takes to regain mobility and strength to get back to normalcy and a level of function to be able to get your life back on track. When we treat a patient at NHNSI we put our best efforts into giving each patient a specific program that meets their individual needs and will help them excel towards their goals. These goals can be difficult at times even daunting at others, but it is inspiring to see each patient push their limits to succeed.

Gary came to NHNSI with a significant back injury suffered while performing his duties as a Manchester firefighter. It was not clear if Gary would ever return to his normal duties following his surgery with NHNSI. His injury had impacted his nerve function and though surgery prevented further damage, hard work and time were going to be necessary to get Gary back to his pre-injury status. The collaboration between the doctor and the physical therapist were key in those first couple months following surgery.

After surgery, Gary began with basic core exercises to strengthen his core in preparation for the higher-level exercises. Once we established a strong core, that’s when the “fun” began. Gary would spend an hour per session working extremely hard with gym equipment and then moving onto functional strength style exercises like box lifts and sled pushing and pulling. All the while Gary also had a Personalized Home Exercise Program that was very strenuous to keep him working hard around the clock as he fought to get back to the job he loved. As the weeks went by the training got harder and harder. Weights increased, as well as the level of difficulty of each task.

Gary would toss a 9-pound ball back and forth with a member of the NHNSI team, while Gary stood tall in a single leg stance. TRX® suspension trainer straps, and agility ladder work, as well as un-even farmer carries were performed to challenge the core stability. Next we were able to test a checklist provided by Manchester fire department. The check list included ladder climbing weighted drags, climbing flights of stairs and many others all while wearing the gear to be worn in a real call.

We are proud to say that through the hard work from Gary and our team of therapists here at NHNSI, Gary has returned to full time duty as a Manchester fire fighter. Here at NHNSI we pride ourselves on providing personalized, one-on-one programs that have proven time and again successful. We work hard and expect our patients to work hard as well.
